Alkaline Trio Releases “This Addiction”
When you listen to Alkaline Trio their punk rock roots come through in their music. The music sometimes sits on top of the punk rock background and at other times the punk is up front and center. Either way, Alkaline Trio’s raw truth will make you sit up and listen.
“This Addiction”, their first album was recorded and produced by the band itself. They did get some help from Matt Allison at Atlas Studios in Chicago, who has been a great friend of the band for a long time. This first album for Alkaline Trio marks their first release on their imprint label Heart & Skull and first with their parent label Epitaph Records.
Though Alkaline Trio created this album with a definite visit to their punk roots, they have put a creative twist to the album and show that they are moving forward musically.
The band’s singer and guitarist Matt Skiba told Spinner.com that “this record is a rock record but our punk rock upbringing definitely shines through, more so than our last few records. The vibe is similar to our humble beginnings. It’s a step forward but I also think it has glimmers of our past in it.”
If you are a fan, or just new to the band, you can stream the title track and first single from the album, “This Addiction” by visiting www.ThisAddiction.org. When you sign in and stream the single, you will receive a Twitter or Facebook posting.
Matt Skiba explained that he single “This Addiction” is a metaphor “about a relationship gone bad and, for some reason, you just can't quit it." When the band has played it live, the crowd has really been into it. You can get the single on iTunes and at other digital retailers.
The way the title track and first single on the album are written, played and interpreted, they set up the listener for what is to come on the album. Matt Skiba immerses himself and the listener in his awesome vocals and his amazing guitar that are unique only to him. Dan Andriano’s vocals and pumping low-end and powerful base hold down the bottom and the steady beat of Derek Grant’s drums hold it all together.
Alkaline Trio certainly takes the listener to the place where punk rock was born and then helps us feel it grow, layer by layer. This first album is certainly the foundation for many more successful albums to come. Punk is certainly not dead after all.
